The new Pankritio Stadium in Heraklion/ Crete has a capacity of 27,000 seats, and will host 10 games of the sport of football during the Olympic Games. It will also include a 400 m track of eight lanes, shot put and hammer throw valves and other facilities (swimming pool, multipurpose hall, administration offices etc.) for post-Olympic use. It will officially be opened as an Olympic Stadium on August 11, 2004. The stadium was inaugurated on 31 March 2004, with an international friendly game of the Greek National Football Team.

The building of the stadium has begun in 1990. The total cost for the completion of the stadium is estimated to be € 50 million. It is located in the Lido district of Heraklion, west of the centre.
After The Olympic Games the stadium will be the official stadium of 1st Division OFI Crete football club.

During the games official tickets cost Euro 10 - 30 for the preliminaries and quarter finals, and Euro 30 - 55 for the semifinal. A ticket can be obtained through the official channels, local National Olympic Committees, and through various tickets' sites on internet.
